New Years Resolution 2015

Well new year, new challenge, new goals! As I've now entered the 53 Mile Hoka Highland Fling, the 55km Lakeland Trail Ultra and the Cotswold Way 100 mile Run (deferred from last year) I need to seriously up my average weekly mileage to a level I have only previously done when training for a marathon. So this year I am aiming to run 2600 miles which works out to 50 miles per week or 7.14 miles a day! Some of it will be slow, bits of it will be fast but I will be logging everything, every warm up/cool down to count towards this target. The aim is to try and have this years goal going on in the background to ensure I do enough training so the events I've entered only really hurt, rather than really, really hurt!! I will be updating this post as the weeks go by.

The long and winding road to the Highland Fling! Take 2!!

Well it's been five years since I ran the Berlin Marathon and I've (just about) forgotten how tough I found those last 12km! Anyway after suffering with Achilles problems for the past few years and a couple of small tears to my left calf in 2012 which put pay to my plans to run the Chicago Marathon I need a new challenge!

I have been toying with the idea of doing an ultra for the past couple of years and came upon the website for the Hoka Highland Fling http://www.highlandflingrace.org and once I had seen the photos and read the comments I was hooked. So on Sunday 9th October at 9pm as soon as entries opened I filled in my entry as quick as possible and clicked send............................no turning back. - that was last year and due to a problem with my hip during a 'warm up ultra' (how daft does that sound??) I didn't make it to the start line.

So after a summer of slow track races where my achillies really didn't want to play ball,  its kind of now or never.

Thu 3/1/13 6.32 PM - 15 x 1/1min effort and recovery at Newcastle with group. Felt reasonable but ran harder than I perhaps should have with saturday in mind. Total distance 6.23 Miles.
Fri 4/1/13 - Rest Day
Sat 5/1/13 Staffordshire Cross Country Championships @ Wolverhampton 1.45 PM - 54th in 43.33. Team 6th (4th Counter). Didn't feel particularly motivated to run today and after running around warming some of the juniors up and watching there races I felt tired when we set off. Course was muddy in places but had an average run - just felt a bit heavy legged.
Sun 6/1/13 1.20 PM - 10 miles steady on the Tissington Trail from Thorpe up and back again. Ave Pace 7.35, Ave HR 172, Max HR 179. Set off pretty steadily and kept slowing myself down, passed Julia when I was about 4 miles and again with a couple of miles left. Pleased with the run after yesterday, didn't tire particularly and felt comfortable throughout.

TOTAL -    30.84 Miles Reasonable week considering resting at New Year and on Friday. Thursday was a good session with the group at Newcastle, felt quite strong and controlled. Would have liked a better run on Saturday but it was consistent with a lot of last years races.

Nightrunner - Delamere Forrest Saturday 15th December

Tonight was the second in the Nightrunner series of events - this one was being held at Delamere Forrest. After the first round at Marbury we decided again to run in 'fancy dress' but I wanted to get a bit faster/higher up the field, so Julia persuaded Jon to run around with her and that left me free to run a bit faster.

I spent a good few hours making my costume from scratch and am really pleased with the result - A Christmas tree, complete with baubles, tinsel, crackers, fairy lights and even a star for the top!
The picture doesn't do us justice ;-)

There were more people than at the first event but a few less 'fancy dressers' oh well here goes...  A cursory 100m warm up jog, I turned on my head torch and fairy lights (now there's a sentence I never thought I would write) and went and lined up about three rows back from the front.

After the countdown we set off and to some peoples amusement and to some "bloody hell I'm not letting him beat me dressed like that's" comments, I looked around and was in about 10th position. I picked my way passed another few runners over the next couple of miles until I worked out I was in 5th. I could see the others in front and their head torches shining when the course turned corners but could make no impression. After about 5 miles I was caught and a small gap opened up. All of a sudden we were back near the start - again this was a 'short' 10km I started to close on the bloke in front but couldn't quite close him down before we crossed the line. Job Done 7th Overall and definitely first Christmas tree! Unbelievably that was probably my best run this year and certainly the most satisfying.
